Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan commented on the situation after the devastating earthquake in the west of the country, saying that authorities are closely monitoring the developments and conducting an investigation. “We are also vigilantly watching the situation. May Allah protect our country and our people from all calamities,” he wrote with a warm dua for those affected.
In the past two days, two tremors were recorded in the western part of Turkey, with the last one happening yesterday around 11 PM. Its magnitude was 6.1, and the epicenter was in the area of the city of Sındırgı in Balıkesir province, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The tremors caused damage in Balıkesir: several houses and stores were partially collapsed. People in Istanbul also felt the vibrations - glasses were shaking in apartments, chandeliers were swaying, and so on.
Many got alerts about the approaching earthquake through a mobile app just a few seconds before the tremors. If the underground movements had been stronger, many wouldn’t have been able to make it to a safe place in time - we pray for those who were affected.
Turkey is in a seismically active zone, so earthquakes happen regularly there: in August, more than 20 buildings collapsed due to tremors.
