Death Toll in Venezuela Earthquake Rises to 920
The number of fatalities from the earthquake in Venezuela has climbed to 920, with 3,630 others injured. National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said the twin quakes on Wednesday (6/24) followed by a strong aftershock caused severe damage in the state of La Guaira. A total of 383 buildings were heavily damaged and 3,007 residents are sheltering in temporary camps and field hospitals. Rescue teams, including international personnel, are still searching for victims believed trapped under rubble.
Rodríguez urged the public to avoid traveling to La Guaira as traffic jams are hampering evacuation and emergency operations. The USGS reported two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela within 39 seconds of each other, centered off the coast of Yaracuy.
