Can the Dead See Us in This World? Here’s What Scholars Say and the Evidence
In Islam, death is a move to the barzakh realm, where the soul waits for the Day of Judgment. KH Yahya Zainul Ma'arif explains that the deceased can still know how their living family is doing, but their focus shifts to the afterlife and the good deeds sent to them. Their concern for the living family might even be greater, as cited by KH Achmad Chalwani Nawawi from Sayyid Abdullah bin Alawi Al-Haddad.
Some evidences show that the deeds of the living are shown to their deceased relatives. Imam Jalaluddin as-Suyuthi narrates that they are happy to see good deeds and pray for guidance if they see bad ones. A hadith from Anas bin Malik narrated by At-Tirmidzi and Sayyid Sabiq's view in Fiqh Sunnah also support this.
Other interactions include visiting graves, where according to Ibnu Qayyim Al-Jauziyyah, the dead recognize the visitor and return the greeting. Meeting through dreams is also possible when souls meet in the sleep realm. In the barzakh, souls greet each other and ask about the living, as explained in the book Ar-Ruh. All of this is part of the unseen, whose true nature only Allah SWT knows.
