Breaking into Second Place in GMTI 2026, Strong Proof Indonesia Dominates Global Halal Tourism
Indonesia managed to grab second place in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2026, a big jump from the previous year. This ranking puts Indonesia on par with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, just below Malaysia which held on to the top spot.
The boost came from a stronger halal tourism ecosystem, like the availability of certified halal food, easy access to prayer facilities, and more Muslim-friendly places to stay. The main destinations that propped up the score include Lombok, known as the “Island of a Thousand Mosques”, Bali with loads of halal restaurant options, Aceh with its high halal standards, plus Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and East Java offering a mix of cultural, nature, and halal culinary travel.
The 2026 GMTI report by Mastercard and CrescentRating cements Indonesia’s role as a major player in global halal tourism, tapping into the world’s largest Muslim population and increasingly better destination development and halal certification policies.
