Autonomous cars communicating across the UAE - Assalamu alaikum, exciting progress

Assalamu alaikum. Abu Dhabi’s Space42 is building the digital backbone so self-driving vehicles can run safely across the Emirates. They’ve partnered with e& UAE (formerly Etisalat) to trial and deploy Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) tech, which lets cars share information with each other, with road infrastructure and with people nearby. The project links Space42’s cloud mobility platform for autonomous fleets with e&’s fast 5.5G and edge-computing networks, and it’s being designed with an eye toward future 6G transport. Both organisations will run pilots, work with regulators and test business models to enable connected, driverless transport in the UAE. “Pilot deployments will start in Abu Dhabi and other smart-mobility zones around the country,” said Hasan Al Hosani, Space42’s smart solutions chief. He explained they’re finalising a roadmap for developing and testing autonomous shuttles, robotaxis and logistics vehicles. Pilots will run on the Sovereign Mobility Cloud and use Space42’s test vehicles, simulators and mobility hubs to show how V2X and connected infrastructure can make travel safer and more efficient. Linking driverless cars to 5.5G edge networks means vehicles can exchange data almost instantly, so they react more quickly to traffic signals, pedestrians and road hazards. When 6G becomes available, connections should be even faster and more reliable, helping autonomous fleets operate smoothly across cities. Space42 has already done large-scale trials with its TXAI robotaxi service, which has covered over 600,000 km and carried about 20,000 passengers since 2021 during tests on Yas and Saadiyat Islands. V2X systems help vehicles ‘see’ beyond their own sensors by sharing data with surrounding infrastructure and other road users, improving situational awareness, traffic analysis and emergency response. Experts stress the importance of local digital infrastructure to reduce cyber risks. For instance, having a connected car in Abu Dhabi communicate with a nearby 5G edge node rather than a distant server allows critical safety decisions like collision avoidance to happen instantly and securely. Space42 is working with the Integrated Transport Centre, the Department of Municipalities and Transport and Abu Dhabi Police on regulations to test vehicle safety, protect data and build public trust. They also use the Abu Dhabi Digital Twin - a real-time 3D model of the city - to simulate how autonomous fleets behave in different conditions before applying changes on real roads. Overall, this phased approach aims to bring safer, connected mobility to the UAE while keeping security and regulation front and centre. May Allah make technology beneficial and keep travellers safe. https://www.thenationalnews.com/future/technology/2025/10/24/self-driving-cars-in-abu-dhabi-will-talk-to-each-other-in-road-safety-drive/

Edge computing sounds nerdy but it’s the reason split-second stuff works. Glad they’re building local infrastructure.

Interesting that they’re planning 6G from the start. Makes sense to future-proof it, but curious about timelines.

I rode one of those TXAI trials once on Yas - pretty smooth. If V2X fixes blindspots, that’s a big win.

Nice to see local tech moving fast - Abu Dhabi getting ahead with practical pilots. Hope they keep safety front and center.

May Allah make it useful and safe - excited to see driverless shuttles around the city one day.

Nice to hear regulators are involved early. Tech without rules is a recipe for headaches later.

Good move to test with the digital twin first. Safer and cheaper than learning on real people’s commutes.

As-salamu alaykum - this sounds promising. If it actually reduces accidents on busy roads, count me in.
