As someone from a Hindu background considering Islam, how can I approach this respectfully?

Assalamu alaikum everyone, I'm currently learning about Islam while coming from a Hindu family, and I'm feeling a bit nervous about how to start. For those of you who've been in a similar situation, how did you handle exploring Islam in a way that was safe and respectful to your family and their beliefs?
