Armed with Nothing but Nerve and a Mother's Prayers, Young Man from Nganjuk Successfully Walks Across 11 Countries to the Holy Land
Muhammad Eka Sandi (37), a resident of Kauman Village, Nganjuk, completed a spiritual journey walking across 11 countries to Mecca for umrah. The 8-month journey began in Surabaya with two friends, but both of them decided to turn back midway. By the time he reached Lampung, Eka only had Rp20,000 left, but he kept on going.
Along the way, he often received food, drinks, and places to rest from local people. After performing umrah, he only had enough money for a plane ticket to Thailand, so he resumed walking to Malaysia, where a kind person gave him a bicycle to get home. Eka arrived in Nganjuk and rested at the Ridho Illahi Mosque in Wilangan before being paraded by a cycling community to the city center.
Eka says he learned a lot about gratitude and surrender to the Creator. His biggest obstacles were finding a place to rest and ensuring halal food in foreign lands. The reunion with his mother at the Great Mosque of Nganjuk became a touching moment that capped off his spiritual journey.
