A Glimpse into the Miraculous Eloquence of the Holy Quran
Let’s look at just one or two examples that show how powerful the word order in Quranic sentences can be. Take this verse, for instance: وَلَئِنْ مَسَّتْهُمْ نَفْحَةٌ مِنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّكَ لَيَقُولُنَّ يَا وَيْلَنَٓا اِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِم۪ينَ (But if a breath of your Lord's punishment touches them they will then say, "Woe to us! we did wrong indeed!"). What this sentence is doing is highlighting how terrifying the punishment is by focusing on the *smallest possible amount* of it. Every single part of the phrase points to this idea of smallness and reinforces it. The words "But if" introduce an element of doubt, which hints at something being unlikely or minor. The verb "touches" means a light, gentle contact-again, a small amount. "A breath" is just a single whiff, and it's in the singular form, grammatically showing it's a one-time event. The grammatical structure (the *tanwin*) makes it indefinite, emphasizing it's so slight it's almost unnoticeable. The word "of" suggests it's just a part or a fragment, pointing to scarcity. Even the word "punishment" here implies a lighter form compared to harsher terms for chastisement. And using "Sustainer" (Rabb), which carries compassion, instead of names like "The Avenger," further softens it and points to this theme of smallness. The whole point is: if even this tiny, hinted-at amount of punishment has such a powerful effect, just imagine how dreadful the full reality of Divine chastisement must be. It’s amazing how every little part of this sentence works together, each word supporting the main goal. This is just a small look at the depth in the Quran's words. May Allah (SWT) protect us all from even the slightest punishment. May He guide us to His pleasure and Paradise. Ameen.
