4 Types of Muharram Fasting, Complete with Evidence and Intentions
Muharram is one of the sacred months honored in Islam. Muslims are encouraged to increase acts of worship, especially voluntary fasting. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, which is Muharram." (Narrated by Muslim).
The types of Muharram fasting include: fasting on the 1st of Muharram as gratitude for the start of the Hijri year, Tasua fasting (9th of Muharram) to distinguish our practice from that of the Jews, Ashura fasting (10th of Muharram) which is highly virtuous and can expiate sins of the past year, and fasting on the 11th of Muharram as a complement. Each fast has its own intention and religious evidence.
Other voluntary fasts in this month are Ayyamul Bidh (the 13th, 14th, and 15th of Muharram) and the Monday-Thursday fasts. The most recommended is a three-day fast: the 9th, 10th, and 11th of Muharram. If unable, one can prioritize Ashura fasting alone. There is no mandatory amount-the more you fast, the greater the reward.
