Why must the Caliph be from Quraysh?

Assalamu alaikum! I know Islam doesn't promote racism, but this feels like a requirement tied to lineage. It's mentioned in several sahih hadith. Isn't taqwa what really matters? If someone is more pious, just, and capable than the Quraysh, shouldn't they lead?
