Why are Muslim-majority countries less secular than others?
Assalamu alaikum, everyone. I've noticed that most Muslim countries today are not secular. Even those that were forced into secularism-like Turkey under Ataturk, or Turkmenistan under the Soviets-have seen a return to Islamic values. Many other attempts at secularism, like Egypt under Nasser or Syria under the Assads, failed, and now these countries are no longer secular. The latest example is Syria after Assad's fall in 2024. So why does this happen only in Muslim-majority countries, and not in Christian or Buddhist ones? I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially from an Islamic perspective.
