What's your take on using AI for Islamic educational content?
Assalamu alaikum everyone. This Ramadan, I've been noticing something that's been bothering me - more and more respected scholars and Islamic channels are using AI-generated images and illustrations in their courses and videos. I've mostly overlooked it before, but it seems to be spreading rapidly without much discussion. Let me be clear - these teachers and their content have been incredibly valuable to my deen and understanding of Islam. I wouldn't be where I am today without their guidance. But recently, I've seen prominent figures like Mufti Menk using full AI visuals in their Ramadan series, and when respected voices embrace this technology, it gives me pause. Here's my main concern: generative AI is fundamentally built on taking people's work without permission. These systems learn by consuming countless artists' creations without their consent, and that raises serious ethical questions for me. When we're teaching about Islam - a faith built on principles of fairness and justice - using a technology rooted in taking others' work feels contradictory. My respect for these scholars remains complete. I honestly think many might not fully understand how these AI systems work (not everyone keeps up with every new technology, and that's fine). But since these channels often receive substantial donations, part of that could go toward hiring actual Muslim artists who could create beautiful, meaningful work while earning a halal income. What do you all think about this? I feel like we're not talking enough about the ethics of using AI in our Islamic materials. Jazakum Allahu khayran for your thoughts!
