Venezuela Quake Death Toll Reaches 920, 50,000 Others Missing
The twin massive earthquake disaster that shook Venezuela has left 920 people dead and more than 50,000 others missing. The coastal area of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas, suffered the worst damage with many apartment buildings, settlements, and public facilities collapsing.
UN Humanitarian Relief Chief Tom Fletcher stated that rescue operations face severe challenges due to the wide affected area, aftershocks, and unstable buildings. Amid limited heavy equipment, victims' families and volunteers are forced to conduct manual searches.
Marjosly Salazar, who lost her daughter and is still searching for her baby and relatives, pleaded for heavy equipment assistance and complained about the absence of government officials. Public anger was visible when interim leader Delcy Rodriguez faced protests during a visit to the affected site.
The chances of finding survivors are dwindling. Chilean rescue team leader Nadiomar Polanco said the focus now is on evacuating bodies. The UN noted that 17 countries have sent rescue teams, including Spain, Switzerland, and the United States.
