Verifying Halal Meat in India
Assalamu alaikum. I’m in Delhi and I stick to halal chicken, staying clear of places that serve pork. But honestly, it’s tough trusting that meat is really halal with all the corruption and mislabeling stories going around. When I hit up big-name restaurants, especially chains with good reputations or international spots, I always ask if the chicken is halal. If they say yeah, I ask to see their halal cert and check it myself before eating. For small cafes and local joints, I usually don’t even try-I just can’t trust their word. Sometimes they straight-up tell me it’s not halal or it’s jhatka, and I respect that. Recently I went to a place where other branches don’t do halal, but this one had a cert I verified, and no pork on the menu, so I felt okay eating there. Later, my sister got upset when I told her. She said India’s too corrupt to trust any cert or claim, and pointed out they serve alcohol too-though I don’t get why that matters. I skip pork joints, but nearly every restaurant here has alcohol, so if I avoided those, I’d have nowhere to eat. Now I’m second-guessing myself. I go through all this effort to check, but I’m still told not to trust anyone. From an Islamic view, what’s my duty? If a restaurant claims it’s halal and shows a cert, is that enough, or do I need to dig deeper? Is there something else I should do? JazakAllahu khayran.
