Venezuela Earthquake Update: Death Toll Hits 188, Another 1,500 Injured
The death toll from two massive earthquakes that rocked Venezuela has risen to 188 as of Friday (6/26/2026), with another 1,500 injured. The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes struck on Wednesday (6/24/2026) near the capital Caracas.
Search and rescue teams are still combing through the rubble to save any survivors. In Caracas and La Guaira, people are trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings. The USGS says both quakes were shallow, worsening the damage. The death toll is expected to keep climbing, and many residents have lost their homes.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez reported that around 250 buildings were heavily damaged or destroyed, mostly in La Guaira. Several countries are ready to help, including the United States with $150 million in aid. Maiquetía International Airport is closed due to severe damage.
