US Seizes Iranian Cargo Ship in Strait of Hormuz, Tehran Condemns as Ceasefire Violation
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated after the US Navy fired upon and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday (April 18, 2026). The Iranian military command condemned the action as piracy and a violation of the still-active ceasefire agreement. US Marines have secured the ship named Touska and are inspecting its cargo.
US President Donald Trump stated that the US Navy's guided-missile destroyer issued warnings before disabling the ship by destroying its engine room. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said warnings were given over a six-hour period before decisive action was taken. So far, there is no certainty regarding casualties in this incident.
This escalation in tensions threatens the continuation of new negotiations between the US and Iran, with the ceasefire scheduled to end this coming Wednesday. This uncertainty has already triggered a rise in oil prices and threatens to worsen the global energy crisis. Iranian state media reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have lodged protests with Pakistan, calling the US action intimidation and indicative of bad faith in the negotiations.
