Understanding the Sunnah Qobliyah Maghrib Prayer: Basis, Intention, and Procedure
The qobliyah Maghrib prayer is a recommended Sunnah worship performed before the obligatory Maghrib prayer. Although not compulsory, practicing it is encouraged based on narrations of Prophet Muhammad SAW, including a Bukhari report that states: 'Pray the Sunnah before Maghrib… for whoever wishes' (HR. Bukhari no. 1183). Other hadiths also highlight the excellence of praying between the adhan and iqamah.
The intention for this prayer is made in the heart upon takbiratul ihram, with the wording: 'Ushalli sunnatal maghribi rak'ataini qabliyyatan mustaqbilal qiblati adaa-an lillaahi ta'aala.' Its procedure is the same as a regular two-rak'ah Sunnah prayer, starting from takbiratul ihram until the salutation (salam).
In practice, it is recommended to recite Surat Al-Kafirun in the first rak'ah and Surat Al-Ikhlas in the second rak'ah, as mentioned in the book Nihayatuz Zain. This prayer complements the obligatory worship and is part of the traditions of Rasulullah SAW.
