UN envoy pushes for civilian rule in Sudan
The UN envoy for Sudan says there’s growing agreement that military rule must end and civilian governance begin. Pekka Haavisto noted that both main warring sides seem united on this. The UN is now focusing on strengthening civil society and political groups to prepare for a future role. Major challenges remain, like ceasefire guarantees and what comes after a truce. Haavisto stressed compromise is essential and that the Muslim Brotherhood’s exclusion from a transitional government is being considered in talks. Discussions on expanding the Quad group to boost pressure for peace are also underway.
