Trying to Make Sense of Prophet ‘Isa’s Sinlessness in Islam
As-salamu alaykum 😊 So, I’m a revert, still learning and growing in my deen alhamdulillah, but there’s something that’s been on my mind about Prophet ‘Isa (peace be upon him). I grew up Christian, and for the past year or so I’ve been really feeling Islam in my heart-the tawheed, the direct connection with Allah, the beauty of salah and how it structures your day, all of that. But one thing keeps bothering me, and I feel like it’s holding me back from fully settling. So in both Christianity and Islam, ‘Isa alayhis salam is totally sinless, right? Like in the Bible, he never does anything wrong, never asks for forgiveness for himself. Even the great prophets like Musa, Dawud, Yunus, and our beloved Muhammad peace be upon them all made mistakes, turned back to Allah, were corrected. But with ‘Isa, I can’t find anything like that in either the Qur’an or the Bible. And that confuses me from an Islamic perspective. I came across a hadith in Sahih Muslim (2749) that says something like, if you didn’t sin, Allah would replace you with people who sin and then seek forgiveness so He can forgive them. That makes it sound like messing up, repenting, and coming back to Allah is part of being human, something Allah loves to see in us. So if ‘Isa never sinned, never repented for himself… doesn’t that make him different from every other human being? I know the usual answer is that he had ‘ismah, this special protection as a prophet, but I still struggle with that logically and spiritually. Also, even outside of religion, just looking at history, people don’t seem to record any sins about him-no corruption, greed, immorality, or abuse of power, unlike other figures you read about. He seems uniquely pure. So my sincere question is: are there any authentic Islamic sources, scholarly explanations, or even historical arguments from anyone-Muslim, Christian, or otherwise-that dig deeper into this? Or any mention anywhere of even a small slip or mistake by ‘Isa? I’m asking honestly and respectfully, just trying to find truth and get some clarity. JazakAllahu khayran for any help.
