Ulama and Scientists Unite in Kemenag's 2026 Hisab Rukyat Team for Determining the Start of Hijri Months
Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar has formally established the Hisab Rukyat Team for 2026 as a strategic step to strengthen synergy between ulama and scientists in determining the beginning of Hijri months in Indonesia. The team includes various elements, such as the Supreme Court, BRIN, BMKG, the Indonesian Ulema Council, Islamic community organizations, academics, falak and astronomy experts, as well as pesantren (Islamic boarding school) leaders.
Minister Nasaruddin emphasized that the team's recommendations must have a strong basis in both sharia and science. Director General of Islamic Community Guidance Abu Rokhmad stated that this team serves as a common space for bringing together sharia and scientific perspectives, so that decisions will carry religious legitimacy and a robust scientific foundation.
Team members have agreed on four points of commitment, which include prioritizing the unity of the ummah, adhering to government regulations, referring to the decisions of the isbat session, and maintaining a conducive atmosphere in the dissemination of information, including on social media. The involvement of prominent ulama and scientists is expected to strengthen legitimacy and maintain harmony within the community.
