The Ruling on Reading the Quran Without Wudu and Touching a Physical Mushaf
Based on scholarly consensus, reading the Quran without wudu (in a state of minor ritual impurity) is permitted, as long as it is done through memorization, reading a translation, or viewing it on a digital screen without directly holding the physical mushaf. However, for a person in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), directly reciting the Quran is not permitted, and it is highly recommended to perform the obligatory bath first.
Different from recitation, the rules regarding physical contact with the mushaf of the Quran are stricter. The majority of scholars from the four schools of thought agree that holding a physical mushaf without wudu is not permitted (haram). This is based on the words of Allah in Surah Al-Waqi'ah, verses 77-79, which state that the Quran is not touched except by those who are purified.
Although reading without wudu is allowed as long as one does not touch the mushaf, scholars emphasize that performing wudu before interacting with the Quran carries greater virtue. This encompasses matters of etiquette and respect, spiritual tranquility, and the psychological benefits as a symbol of self-purification.
