The Rule of Sacrifice in Islam: Explanation After Bahlil's Statement
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia drew criticism over his statement that every Muslim must slaughter one goat or chip in for a cow/camel per seven people during Eid al-Adha. The scholars clarify that the ruling on sacrifice varies according to different schools of thought.
In the Hanafi school, sacrifice is obligatory for those financially able, with the same nisab as zakat. The Shafi'i and Maliki schools consider it a confirmed sunnah, provided one has surplus wealth after fulfilling the family's basic needs on the day of Eid and the three days of tashreeq.
The main textual evidence for sacrifice is Surah Al-Kawthar, verse 2: "fashalli li rabbika wanhar," along with a hadith narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Majah about the prohibition of abandoning the sacrifice for those who can afford it.
