The Meaning of the Tradition of Drinking White Milk on the Night of 1 Muharram
The night of 1 Muharram is a moment for Muslims to increase prayers and good deeds. One of the traditions practiced is drinking a glass of white milk, a practice that has a historical basis from the great scholar of Mecca, Abuya Sayyid Muhammad Alawy Al Maliki. He regularly distributed white milk on the night of 1 Muharram as a form of tafa’ul (hoping for goodness).
White milk was chosen because it symbolizes a new page that is clean and healthy. The white color and its nutrients become a metaphor for hoping that the new year will be filled with goodness, cleansing from sins, and a sweet life. This tradition is carried out from Maghrib time until before Subuh, by reciting the prayer: Allahumma baarik lanaa fiihi wazidnaa minhu.
This practice invites Muslims to cleanse their hearts and renew their intentions in the new Hijri year, with the hope of always being under the blessings of Allah SWT.
