The Meaning of QS Ar-Rahman Verse 33: Man, Knowledge, and the Limits of Ability
Allah SWT says in Surah Ar-Rahman Verse 33: 'O assembly of jinn and mankind! If you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not be able to pass except with authority from Allah.' This verse invites humans and jinn to reflect on their ability to explore the universe.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia explains that this verse is a call to try to penetrate the regions of the heavens and the earth if they have the ability, but without strength from Allah SWT it is impossible. Some interpreters understand "sulthan" as knowledge, which is the means for humans to achieve things that were previously impossible, like modern space technology.
Islam views the achievement of knowledge not as arrogance, but as proof of the greatness of Allah who gave reason. However, this verse emphasizes that human ability remains limited; no matter how high technology develops, humans still depend on Allah SWT. In the modern era, this verse is relevant for aligning progress with faith, realizing that all strength comes from Allah SWT.
