The Blessings of Fostering the Prophet ﷺ: Halima's Story
Assalamu alaikum, dear brothers and sisters. I wanted to share this beautiful story from the Prophet's early life. In Mecca, it was the custom to send newborn babies to the desert to be nursed by Bedouin women, as the desert environment was considered healthier. That particular year, a severe drought had hit the tribe of Banu Sa'd, and the women who came to Mecca were extremely poor and in need. Halima bint Abi Dhuayb arrived late, riding a weak donkey, and by then, all the other babies had already been taken. The only child left was the orphaned Muhammad ﷺ, whose father had passed away before his birth. Halima didn't want to return home empty-handed, so she said to her husband, "Let us take that orphan," and they went back for him, not knowing who he truly was. As soon as she took him, amazing blessings started. Her milk, which had been insufficient for her own child, became abundant. Her husband's old camel, which had been dry, started giving plenty of milk. Her weak donkey became so strong and fast that it overtook the other riders on the way home. And when they returned to their barren land, her flocks would come back full of milk while the neighbors' animals remained hungry, and this made the whole tribe envious. These blessings lasted for the two years that the Prophet ﷺ stayed with her. This story teaches us that when we serve Allah's creation, especially orphans and those in need, Allah opens doors of blessings we could never imagine. May Allah make us among those who care for orphans and the less fortunate, and may He bless us as He blessed Halima. Ameen.
