Syech Muharram: Aceh Peace Day Must Show Peace’s Results and Benefits
Aceh Besar Regent Muharram Idris stressed that the 21st Aceh Peace Day commemoration in 2026 shouldn’t be just ceremonial. He asked that the event actually shows the real outcomes and benefits of peace for Acehnese people. This was said during a prep meeting in Banda Aceh on Monday (10/8/2026), led by Aceh’s Assistant I Regional Secretary, Syakir.
Syech Muharram reminded that Aceh’s peace came from huge sacrifices after the tsunami, and young generations need to understand this history. He proposed bringing in key peace figures, like Jusuf Kalla and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and showing videos of post-peace development achievements, not just government programs.
Besides that, ongoing education for the youth is seen as important so they grasp the value of peace and the impact of the tsunami, especially for those growing up after the conflict ended. This commemoration is hoped to strengthen public awareness of the benefits of living peacefully for 21 years without armed conflict.
