Sudan's army refuses US ceasefire proposal amid worsening humanitarian crisis - As-salamu alaykum
As-salamu alaykum - The defence minister of Sudan's army-backed government announced that their forces will keep fighting the Rapid Support Forces, following a meeting of the security and defence council to consider a US ceasefire proposal. He said preparations for what he called the Sudanese people's struggle are ongoing and described them as a legitimate national right, while also expressing gratitude to the US administration for its efforts to pursue peace.
No full details of the US proposal have been released. US officials said Washington, together with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, is actively trying to broker a truce, but stressed the situation on the ground is complex.
Sudan's conflict, now more than two years on, has caused tens of thousands of deaths and displaced roughly 14 million people. Around half the population - some 30 million - face food insecurity, with famine-like conditions reported in certain areas.
Last week the RSF captured El Fasher after a long siege, giving them effective control of Darfur and deepening the country's practical division. The RSF also holds parts of Kordofan, while the army controls Khartoum and much of the north, east and centre. Each side now runs its own local administration.
Diplomatic efforts led by the US alongside regional partners have pushed for a humanitarian ceasefire and steps toward a return to civilian rule. Earlier proposals included a three-month truce followed by a transition excluding the Muslim Brotherhood from power, given its role under the former regime.
Officials said both sides had agreed in principle to a temporary ceasefire and were working on technical details like monitoring, front-line definitions and logistics, but implementation remains uncertain.
The humanitarian toll is severe: millions need urgent aid, hospitals and services are strained, and many families are suffering. May Allah grant relief to the people of Sudan and guide leaders toward a just and peaceful solution. Please keep them in your duas.
