Strengthening Indonesia's Halal Tourism, a New Strategy to Attract the Global Muslim Market
Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism sees halal tourism development not just as providing services for Muslim travelers, but also as a way to strengthen the national sharia economy. Rizki Handayani, Acting Deputy for Industry and Investment at the Ministry, said this move aligns with the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), which places Muslim-friendly tourism and the sharia economy as key parts of national development.
Rizki stressed that collaboration between the government, businesses, and stakeholders is needed to build a quality and competitive halal industry ecosystem. Strengthening halal products and services is seen as a way to open up wider market access, especially for MSMEs, which are the backbone of the tourism sector.
As of May 30, 2026, a total of 31,548 halal certifications have been facilitated for MSMEs in 1,116 tourism villages across 34 provinces. This achievement shows that halal certification isn't just about meeting regulations, but also about improving product quality, tourist trust, and business competitiveness.
