Selaparang Police Evacuate Suspected Charity Box Thief at Baitul Ibadah Mosque, Mataram
Selaparang Police moved fast to evacuate a guy suspected of stealing from the charity box at Baitul Ibadah Mosque, Gegutu Timur neighborhood, Rembige village, Selaparang district, Mataram city, on Thursday (7/2). They did this to stop the angry locals from taking matters into their own hands.
Selaparang Police Chief Iptu Zulharman Lutfi led the evacuation himself after getting word that residents planned to catch the suspect. The charity box theft supposedly happened on Monday (6/29). The mosque’s management identified the suspect through CCTV footage, and it turns out he’s a local and used to be the mosque’s caretaker.
The neighborhood head had tried to settle things amicably, but it didn’t work out, which got people riled up. So the police evacuated the suspect to the Mataram Police HQ for his safety and to let the legal process run. The police chief urged the public to leave the case to the cops and not do anything violent.
This quick move managed to calm tensions and keep the public order situation stable.
