Seeking Advice on Wearing Hijab Safely in a Kitchen Job
Assalamu’alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh :) I'm a recent revert, Alhamdulillah, just about a week since my shahada! Trying to learn and adjust step by step. My husband has been amazing, helping me with prayer and other essential parts of Islam, but I feel ready to take the next step on my own by fully embracing hijab. Honestly, I’ve been nervous because I’ve faced serious racism before, even when I wasn’t religious, so it’s been hard to want something so visible. But since becoming Muslim, I feel really uncomfortable wearing immodest clothes - it’s a big change from before when I thought “less clothing is feminist” and all that. I’ve gotten rid of most of my old clothes and am starting fresh with a couple of abayas I found online and some loose pants and skirts I already had. Living in the US, it’s not always easy or cheap to find modest clothes, so any tips would be great! My biggest issue is work: I’m a manager and chef at a soup kitchen, so I’m the only one cooking and we do batch cooking. Because I’m the only cook, I can adjust for safety a bit, but the kitchen requires tight-fitting clothes to avoid any fabric catching fire. I got sports hijabs that cover my hair and neck tightly without loose ends, and I want to start wearing those, but they get really hot, especially when I’m near the stove, and I worry about sweating. Does anyone know of good hijab options that are modest but also safe in a kitchen setting? Something breathable but secure so nothing can catch flame? Jazakum Allahu khairan for any advice! Sorry if this shows up more than once, just want to get as much input as possible.
