Rescuers Race Against Time to Find Thousands of Victims of Venezuela's Devastating Earthquake
The search operation for victims of the massive earthquake in Venezuela is hitting a crucial phase. Rescue teams from home and abroad are racing against time to find survivors trapped under the rubble. The Venezuelan government has confirmed at least 235 people dead and over 4,300 injured from two quakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on Wednesday (June 24). The death toll is expected to keep climbing as hundreds are believed still trapped.
The La Guaira region, near the capital Caracas, suffered the worst damage with more than 250 buildings damaged or collapsed, including hospitals and public facilities. International aid is starting to flow in from Switzerland, Turkey, the Netherlands, Colombia, Mexico, and other countries, along with UN support. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a national emergency and set up an initial reconstruction fund of USD 200 million.
The magnitude 7.5 quake was recorded as the strongest in over a century. While Caracas and La Guaira saw widespread destruction, key oil production facilities were not disrupted. The government's focus right now is on saving victims and handling the tens of thousands of affected people.
