Red Sea Heats Up, Houthis Attack Aramco Refinery in Saudi Arabia
The Houthi group claimed to have launched missile and drone attacks on Aramco facilities in Yanbu and Jizan on Saturday, July 25. This action was said to be retaliation for airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition on the city of Hodeida, Yemen.
Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree stated the targets were two strategic areas on the Red Sea coast. Saudi civil defense authorities confirmed warning sirens sounded, but Riyadh has not yet given details on the impact of the attack.
This escalation increases threats to the security of international shipping lanes in the Red Sea. The Houthis threatened to blockade the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which handles about 12 percent of global trade, in response to the blockade on Yemen and attacks on Sanaa International Airport.
Amid the tension, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The situation raises concerns over the security of energy supply chains and international trade.
