Rakan Mayasi's Debut Film Tackles Arranged Marriage, Personal Roots at Cannes
Filmmaker Rakan Mayasi premiered his deeply personal debut 'Yesterday the Eye Didn't Sleep' at Cannes, inspired by his Lebanese grandmother who was married at 14. Set in the Bekaa Valley, it follows two sisters offered as brides to settle a Bedouin feud. Mayasi used non-professional actors and minimal crew, filming near the Syrian border amid nearby explosions. He spoke about the importance of reflecting on regional tragedies, including the war in Gaza, and feels making films is his form of resistance.
