Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile: Can it be safely transferred?
The fate of Iran’s ~440kg of 60% enriched uranium is a major sticking point in US-Iran talks. Trump says the US won’t let Iran keep it, but Iran’s supreme leader has reportedly issued a directive against sending it abroad. This deadlock could delay negotiations. Interestingly, the uranium is mostly hexafluoride gas stored underground, and while transferring it is feasible-using special IAEA-approved containers-the political hurdles seem bigger than the technical ones.
