Protests in Kano: 'America wants to control our resources' - Locals reject threats
As-salamu alaykum. People in Kano, a city in northern Nigeria, took to the streets after President Trump threatened military action, rejecting his claim of a “Christian genocide,” local reports say.
In predominantly Muslim Kano State, many Muslim groups gathered on Saturday to condemn the talk of attacking Nigeria. Protesters carried signs reading things like “We condemn Trump’s threat to attack Nigeria,” “There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria,” and “America wants to control our resources.”
On November 1, Trump said he had asked the Pentagon to draw up options for possible military measures in Nigeria, claiming it was to protect Christian communities. He also warned that if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians,” the US would cut all aid and might intervene “guns-a-blazing.”
Nigeria’s government has denied widespread persecution of Christians. Before the threat, President Bola Tinubu had emphasized that religious tolerance is a core part of Nigeria’s identity. The country is also battling a long-running conflict in the northeast and armed “bandit” gangs in the northwest who kidnap, raid villages, and kill - with many victims coming from the mainly Muslim north.
Some observers say the harsher US rhetoric may be tied to Nigeria’s refusal to accept non-Nigerian deportees expelled from the United States under recent immigration policies.
May Allah protect the innocent and guide leaders toward justice and peace.
