Private Boundaries Between Husband and Wife: Is There Anything They Can't See?

In Islam, a husband and wife don’t have any awrah limits with each other after the marriage contract. Both can look at each other's entire body, including during intimacy or bathing together. The proofs include Surah Al-Mu’minun verses 5–6 and the hadith of Mu‘awiyah bin Haidah which reaffirm this permissibility. That said, Islam still sets etiquette for the marital relationship. Some of these are: purifying your intention as an act of worship, reciting a prayer before intercourse, maintaining cleanliness, covering yourselves with a blanket, and not having intercourse when the wife is menstruating or through the anus. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also forbade spreading private marital secrets. After intercourse, the couple must perform ghusl (ritual bath) to become pure again before worship. If they want to repeat it, it’s recommended to perform wudu first.
