Prabowo Targets Rupiah Exchange Rate of 16,800–17,500 in 2027, Economists Say It's Still Realistic with Caveats
President Prabowo Subianto is aiming for the rupiah exchange rate to be in the range of 16,800 to 17,500 per US dollar by 2027. Trimegah Sekuritas economist Fakhrul Fulvian thinks the target is still realistic, even though global pressures and geopolitical uncertainty remain high. As of Friday (May 22, 2026), the rupiah was at 17,700 per US dollar.
Fakhrul said hitting this target will require tackling some major homework, especially in maintaining credible economic growth. He noted that the policy of holding fuel prices down has also contributed to the rupiah's weakening. According to him, the government needs to let the market adjust to global price movements to keep the rupiah stable.
Meanwhile, President Prabowo emphasized the government's commitment to keeping inflation in the 1.5–3.5 percent range. He also announced targets for reducing poverty to 6.0–6.5 percent and the open unemployment rate to 4.30–4.87 percent. The 2027 state budget deficit is targeted at 1.80–2.40 percent of GDP.
