NU Activist Slams 'Prabowo's Brand of Islam': Accuses It of Kidnapping Critical Voices and Legitimizing Any Means
BANDA ACEH – Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) activist Rois Faisal Ridho has fired off criticism at what he calls 'Prabowo's brand of Islam'. The critique was aired through a statement that touches on the backing of several religious figures for President Prabowo Subianto's administration.
'Prabowo's Islam, as endorsed by Anwar Iskandar, the MUI chairman who's also a member of Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA), and Nasaruddin Umar as Religious Affairs Minister, is an Islam that kidnaps critical people,' Rois said on his X account, Saturday (9/5/2026). He also slammed what he sees as practices that justify any means for the sake of power and ambition.
Rois also took aim at political and diplomatic ties he linked to Zionist groups, and blasted the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, which he claims has sparked serious problems. He stressed that none of this reflects the Islam he follows.
This statement adds to the growing pile of criticism over the relationship between religion and power under Prabowo's government. The accusations need some clearing up from those named, including the government and the religious figures involved.
