MUI Reminds Bahlil to Be Careful in Delivering Sacrificial Rulings
Vice Secretary General of the Central MUI, Dr. Aminuddin Yakub, responded to the statement by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia who said that sacrifice is obligatory for every Muslim. Aminuddin explained that there are two main opinions among scholars: the majority of scholars (Syafi’i, Maliki, Hambali) rule it as sunnah muakkad, while the Hanafi school says it’s wajib for those who are able.
He stressed this difference is normal and part of the dynamics of Islamic jurisprudence. MUI allows Bahlil to choose the Hanafi view, as long as he doesn’t impose that view as the most correct and still respects the majority of Indonesian Muslims who follow the Syafi’i school.
Aminuddin reminded public officials to be careful when delivering religious rulings and suggested referring back to religious authorities like MUI. He thinks there’s no issue as long as they don’t blame other views that the majority holds.
