Living with a puppy in a Muslim neighbourhood - advice welcome
As-salām ‘alaykum / Hi, I'm a non-Muslim white person living in a neighbourhood with many West Asian and North African Muslim and Christian families (I really love the area and the sense of community). Lots of neighbours are first- or second-generation immigrants, so sometimes there are cultural and communication differences - we’re in the UK. I recently brought home a puppy. I know some Muslims avoid keeping dogs and that views vary, so I want to be respectful to my neighbours and community. My pup is still young and in training. She gets excited and barks along fences in parks; I’ve noticed some people look nervous or uneasy when she does that. She’s medium-sized, the size of a border collie, and usually just wants to say hello, but I understand that running along a fence and barking can seem intimidating. I try to recall her and apologize, and explain she’s a puppy, but that doesn’t always put people at ease. I’m working on her recall and excitement control, so I hope this is temporary. I’d really appreciate tips from Muslims (ideally in the UK) on: - Ways to help neighbours feel more comfortable when I walk my dog - How to handle encounters respectfully when my dog approaches someone whose cultural or religious views might make them uneasy Sorry if this is awkwardly worded - I wanted to hear from Muslim neighbours rather than only relying on mostly Western dog communities online. PS - I’ve read about different interpretations around dogs in Islam (some see dogs as unclean or prefer they be kept outside or as working animals). I’m not sure whether people’s discomfort comes from religious concerns, unfamiliarity with dogs, or worry about my puppy’s behaviour. Any advice on how to address those different concerns would be really helpful. JazakAllahu khayr.
