Kyrgyz in the US: Foreign Ministry tips amid tightening immigration controls

Assalamu alaikum, brothers and sisters. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan has issued a number of recommendations for compatriots who are currently in the USA, against the background of increased checks of immigration status. Diplomats note that there is a campaign in the US to check the status of foreigners. To avoid getting into an unpleasant situation, they advise: don’t forget your ID at home; know your current immigration status exactly; and, if possible, avoid participating in mass actions and rallies. Regarding visiting a mosque: it’s better to follow the directions of the local imam and try to avoid crowds of people outside of obligatory prayers. If immigration police stop you - stay calm, remember your right to a lawyer and don’t sign documents you don’t understand or that haven’t been translated. It’s also useful to have consular service numbers, relatives’ contacts and the address of the local mosque on hand in case you need support. The MFA added that Kyrgyz foreign missions are in constant contact with the competent US authorities and are tracking possible cases of citizens’ detentions. Earlier the president of Kyrgyzstan supported citizens’ initiative to introduce the death penalty.
