Know the 4 Pillars of Charity, Conditions for Validity, and Things to Avoid

Charity is a highly recommended practice in Islam, as stated by Allah in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 245, which promises multiplied rewards for those who give a good loan to Allah. For charity to be valid according to sharia, four pillars must be fulfilled. First, the giver of charity (al-mutashaddiq) must be of age, sane, have free will, possess lawful wealth, and not be under guardianship. Second, the recipient of charity (al-mutashaddaq ‘alaih) must be clearly identified, with priority given to the poor, needy, and relatives in need. Third, the wealth being donated (al-mutashaddaq bihi) must be halal, beneficial, and not damaged goods. Fourth, the offer and acceptance can be done verbally or through direct handover. In addition, there are several things to avoid so that the reward of charity is not lost, including hurting the recipient's feelings (al-adza), reminding them of the gift (al-mann), showing off, giving improper items, and lacking sincerity.
