June 18, International Day Against Hate Speech
Every June 18, the world marks the International Day for Countering Hate Speech. The UN General Assembly set this day in July 2021, continuing the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech that kicked off on June 18, 2019. The idea is to remind everyone that words can either build or wreck a society.
The UN defines hate speech as any communication that attacks or puts down someone based on identity, like religion, ethnicity, race, or gender. It's seen as dangerous 'cause it can spark discrimination, social conflict, even mass violence. The rise of social media and digital tech, including AI, just speeds up how fast it spreads around the globe.
In Indonesia, with over 270 million people and a ton of ethnic and religious diversity, this challenge hits close to home. The government, community groups, and online communities keep working to curb hate speech through laws, digital literacy, and platform moderation. This day invites us all to reflect and choose respectful, tolerant, and fact-based communication for a more peaceful and inclusive society.
