Jombang Street Vendor Realizes Dream of Hajj After 29 Years of Struggle
Teman Hariono (51), a street vendor from Peterongan sub-district, Jombang, has finally achieved his dream of performing the Hajj pilgrimage after a 29-year struggle. Alongside his wife, Jumilah (50), he sold goods consistently at terminals, buses, and various public events, guided by the principle, "what matters is that it's halal and we can set aside a little bit at a time." Their journey began in 1988, with daily earnings starting at around Rp35,000 and eventually rising to Rp300,000 per day, diligently saving even in small amounts.
This couple registered as prospective Hajj pilgrims in 2012 and are finally scheduled to depart this year. Teman Hariono expressed his gratitude, "Alhamdulillah, I never imagined we'd reach this point." Meanwhile, Ilham Rohim, Head of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah Office in Jombang Regency, stated that 1,267 prospective pilgrims from Jombang will depart on May 6-7, 2026, via the Juanda Surabaya Embarkation.
