Israel Detains 20 Turkish Citizens in Raid on Gaza Humanitarian Aid Flotilla
Israeli forces arrested 20 Turkish citizens during an operation to raid the ships of the Gaza humanitarian mission, the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) II, on Wednesday night (29/4/2026). The Turkish delegation reported that the flotilla was intercepted in international waters, over 900 km away from Gaza, near Greek waters. Israeli troops surrounded and stormed the ships off the coast of Crete, Greece, with more than 170 activists detained and taken to Israel.
A total of 21 ships were surrounded, but 17 of them managed to break through and entered Greek waters to request protection. Before the raid, communication with other ships and the GSF mission center was cut off due to reported interference carried out by Israeli forces. This mission aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, involving around 1,000 activists from 70 countries with 50 ships to break through the military blockade and open a sea corridor for humanitarian relief.
