Is joking with a lie considered haram if you quickly say it's a joke?

Assalamu alaikum, everyone. I get that lying is haram, but what about when you're just joking around? If you say something that's not true and then right away tell the person it's a joke, does that make it okay? I'm trying to understand the difference between having a reason to do something and having a justification that's actually fair or moral. Can someone help clarify this?
