Is It True That Prophet Muhammad SAW Kept a Cat? Here's the Explanation
Prophet Muhammad SAW was sent as a mercy to all the worlds, including animals. His compassion encompassed all living beings. One popular story says the Prophet kept a cat named Muezza.
But actually, there’s no authentic narration that backs up the Muezza story. Muslims are reminded not to spread false tales about the Prophet, as he said: “Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in Hell.” (Narrated by Bukhari). The Quran also commands tabayyun (verification) when receiving news (Qur’an 49:6).
Even so, proof of the Prophet’s kindness to cats is there in authentic hadith. For example, he told about a woman who went to hell because she neglected her cat until it died of hunger, neither feeding it nor letting it go find food on its own (Narrated by Bukhari).
