Iraqi MP Barred from Upcoming Elections After Criticizing Iran-Linked Militias

Sajad Salim, who previously took part in the peaceful pro-democracy protests in 2019, was excluded by Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission. The commission stated that Mr. Salim had offended participants in the Shiite Muharram rituals, specifically those involved in Hussainiyah processions commemorating Imam Hussein, may Allah be pleased with him. However, the details were not made clear.
Mr. Salim has not responded directly to these claims but is known for his strong stance against the Popular Mobilisation Forces, a group largely composed of Iran-backed militias operating with government approval. He advocates for the dissolution of these militias and accountability for their actions.
He has faced harassment from some armed groups, including raids and legal cases accusing him of defamation. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to continue supporting reforms and the idea of an Iraqi state free from militia dominance.
The upcoming elections, the sixth since the 2003 invasion, are expected to be highly competitive as various religious and ethnic groups seek influence. Mr. Salim had planned to run as an independent candidate in the eastern province of Wasit.
