Iran Fires on Merchant Ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a Vital Global Oil Route
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated again after Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was reported to have fired on at least two merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. All crew members are reported safe, even though the attack took place near Omani waters, prompting several ships to turn back. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic route used by about 20 percent of global oil supply, so disruptions there affect global energy stability.
Iran stated this aggressive action is a response to the American maritime blockade. The IRGC reimposed restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, April 18, 2025, after reopening it to commercial vessels the day before. In fact, Iran warned that ships attempting to pass without permission may be targeted militarily.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council emphasized that it will continue to monitor ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz until the war with the U.S. ends and lasting peace is achieved. In an official statement, the council considered that the U.S. blockade of ships at Iranian ports is viewed as a violation of the ceasefire agreement, which could hinder the limited reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This statement was issued via the Tasnim news agency on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
