Haris Rusly Calls “Indonesia Goes Bankrupt” and “Sale Indonesia” Narratives Anti-Self-Reliance Garbage Narratives
BANDA ACEH – The initiator of the 98 Resolution Network, Haris Rusly Moti, criticized pessimistic narratives like “Indonesia Goes Bankrupt,” “Dark Indonesia,” “Sale Indonesia,” “Fleeing Indonesia,” and “Dump the Rupiah.” He called them anti-self-reliance garbage narratives that are anomalous and unknown in the tradition of social movements.
Haris compared them to the legacy of the nation’s founders’ struggle, such as Bung Hatta’s plea for Indonesian Independence (1928) and Bung Karno’s Indonesia Accuses (1930), which offered an antithesis to colonialism. He regretted the emergence of anti-self-reliance narratives 80 years after independence, especially when they’re driven by intellectuals and students.
He considers that President Prabowo Subianto is actually reviving the spirit of national self-reliance through policies strengthening the economy and controlling strategic resources. Issues of state revenue leakage, under invoicing, and transfer pricing that were once criticized are now on the government’s agenda.
Haris emphasized that social movements should essentially present alternative ideas, not just look for problems or attack individuals. He cited the democracy movements of the New Order era and the early reform-era anti-neoliberalism movements as examples of movements with a clear direction of struggle.
